As for keeping the fish and corals healthy, it is a simple matter of 'know how' and 'know what.' I have been putting aquariums together for myself and others for 14 years. I am, by hands on experience, highly educated with the knowledge to build and maintain your freshwater or saltwater system. Unfortunately, it is the maintenance of these miniature ecosystems that persuade many to not bother with them at all. That is where Frank's Tanks and Maintenance comes in! I can put your tank together for you and set up a maintenance schedule that will leave you practically nothing to do except feed and enjoy!!! And based on your desire for the kind of aquarium that you are wanting, I will be able to let you know which fish and/or corals are compatible with one another. Some of the most important elements of building and maintaining a successful tank with healthy inhabitants will include having the proper equipment, a variety of foods, and for some animals, the proper chemical water additions. For example, African Cichlids like a little salt in their water as is in their natural environment. There are salts on the market to serve this purpose. They also live in water with a higher pH of that of many freshwater fish so chemicals that raise and maintain the pH should be considered as well. Regardless as to freshwater or saltwater, you should choose a good filtration system. There are many on the market. Some are better than others. One with bio-media that is capable of reducing ammonia to nitrites, and nitrites to the less harmful nitrates would be ideal. I would never reccommend undergravel filtration systems because the plastic filter can actually trap nitrates. Nitrates in high concentrations can be detrimental to your aquatic life. You will surely want a good, reliable heater that is rated for the size of the tank that you have, the proper lighting, ( 3-4 watts per gallon in reef tanks ) and eventually a good protein skimmer if you have saltwater. As for feeding, give your fish a variety. I enjoy spinach, but I wouldn't want to have it 2-3 times a day everyday. Whatever you choose, I will gladly assist you. You can either call me on the phone number that is listed on this site or click on the email link. I am a marine hobbyist and although I enjoy the hobby and am very knowledgeable, I don't claim to know everything that there is to know about aquariums or the livestock. Even biologist are learning new things everyday. If I stumble across something that I cannot give you an honest answer about, I won't give you an answer or begin working a solution to a problem until I find it! If you need aquarium products or supplies, check with me before buying. I will usually save you a substantial amount of money! In the meantime, please enjoy the pictures in my photo gallery. All pictures are of my 135 gallon reef system and of the tanks that I have either built or maintain. |
